Ep. 004: Why My (Future) Kids Won’t Believe in Santa Claus
He’s making a list, checkin’ it twicegonna find out who’s naughty or niceSanta Claus is coming to town 🎶
And it hit me: Santa Claus is super judgmental!
Then, a few interesting parallels with major religion followed: He’s a man that you never see, living above you (North Pole), always watching, deciding if you’re good or bad (naughty or nice), and what you get in life (on Christmas) is based on that judgement. And the parallels didn’t stop there!
All of a sudden, Santa is another way to reinforce judgement and subconscious weirdness about receiving and deserving (amongst a few other things.) Yikes!
Personally, my wife and I don’t plan on raising our kids with the story of Santa Claus. (Though kids are far off for us — we’re not even dog-parent ready!) For us, there’s more reasoning than the judgmental bit (which is discussed in the episode.) But even if Santa is an experience you want to pass on, we can make use of his fictional nature and rewrite the weird backstory into one that reflects the Universe we believe in: one of non-judgment, freedom from fear, and love without conditions.
